What Is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are small caps that caps that are placed onto the teeth in order to protect them from damage, or to restore their shape. They’re best suited to patients who have damage to their teeth that’s too substantial for fillings to deal with, but not so severe that the tooth needs to be removed. They can be used to repair severe cavities, cracks in the tooth, or to finish off a root canal.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

The first step in getting your dental crown will be the planning phase. This involves picking the color of your dental crown and choosing the material it will be made from, among other things. Once this is done, we’ll prepare the tooth for the eventual restoration.

This will involve removing a small amount of your enamel in order to make room for the dental crown. We’ll numb your tooth completely before this, ensuring your complete comfort. Once this is done, we’ll take an impression of your tooth and will use this to design your crown.

This design will be sent to an external lab where it will be meticulously crafted to match your teeth. This process will take a few weeks, and in the meantime your tooth will be protected with a temporary dental crown. Once your final restoration is complete we’ll call you back into our office for the final placement.
